Through the square window

As a child, I discovered rocking on my chair to become a bit of an obsession that did bring me unwanted attention.
It was purely through my experimentation that I found sometimes when I rocked on my chair, I was able to very briefly (probably a second but who knows?) suspend myself ‘in space’ on the chairs two legs instead of the four.
I would do it usually when I was daydreaming? thinking? of floating in space.
My inner wish to float and fly was not something I told anyone but was very much a part of my everyday thoughts.
My Mum’s upright hairdryer that stood at the end of my sister’s bed in our bedroom was often used as our spaceship. We would launch ourselves into ‘space’ with our heads under the large hood and use the control panel for the countdown to blast off.
Anyway moving along…………
One particular day when all the family was seated at the dining table I started rocking on my chair. Behind where I sat was a door that had a number of glass panels within a wood frame (common in many homes in England). The door led out into the back garden.
My Mum told me to stop it which I probably did at that moment? but I am able to recall that I did again rock my chair and the next thing I knew I was floating backwards.
As I gazed up and looked at the sky, thinking how lovely it looked, I realised what had happened. I do not recall having any injuries whatsoever but I do recall thinking – I am going to get in trouble for going through the glass window.
Very quickly my parent’s face’s appeared above mine and they were clearly more concerned with my wellbeing than the door. I cannot recall if that was the last of my rocking as I doubt it but I did not get to sit in the same spot after that.
I laugh now for so many things that I once thought were bad.
